Partnership with Charleston County School District

Charleston County Public School District Partnership:
The challenge of educating our children is ranked high among the most important issues facing our community. Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. is a leader in mobilizing the community to act collectively in support of our public schools, forging partnerships, and enhancing public engagement to ensure that every student has a quality public education to reach their highest potential.

The City partners with our schools in a variety of ways:

Burke Middle/High School Partnership
The City pledged strong support and a partnership with Burke High & Middle School. Departments and divisions made a commitment that aligns with the needs of the school and compliments Burke’s plan to improve academic achievement.

Children’s Defense Fund Summer Freedom School
The City of Charleston in partnership with the Carolina Youth Development Center, the Charleston County School District, the College of Charleston Center for Strategic Partnerships; and the New Morning Foundation sponsored the Freedom School Summer Program, a five week literacy-rich summer program for 50 Burke Middle School students.

Jump Start Read for the Record
A national campaign designed to encourage children and parents to read. Parents receive training on how to read to and with their children.

Grant Station
A premiere online funding website for agencies, organizations seeking grants, funding sources, and grant writing tools. America’s Promise has awarded MOCYF membership to this website for the past two years. MOCYF offers access and training on the Grant Station to nonprofit organizations, mentoring, afterschool programs and schools in their search for funding.

Pilots Best Practices
MOCYF researches national projects and best practicies that would benefit local education efforts for children, youth, and families. We work to link and connect schools to community resources and programs such Hands on Charleston; Christmas Elves, AmeriCorps Summer of Service for Youth, Job Shadowing, Day of Caring and others.

School-based Mentoring Programs
It is more important than ever for children and youth to experience sustained relationships with caring adults. Mentoring involves building a friendship with a child or youth and providing him/her with support, guidance and advocacy. School-based mentoring programs afford greater access to reaching children in need of mentors. MOCYF offers support services to schools to ensure quality and success in recruiting and maintaining volunteer mentors. MOCYF provides schools with various resources such as start-up and management guides, mentor forms, a Mentor Resource guide, training workshops and technical assistance.
