Jpseph P. Riley Named to Top NLC Leadership Post
Mayor Joseph P. Riley was appointed to chair the 2008 Council on Youth, Education, and Families of the National League of Cities (NLC). The NLC Council on Youth, Education, and Families works to assist municipal leaders in identifying and developing effective programs for strengthening families and improving outcomes for the children and youth in their communities, and guides and oversees the work of NLC’s Institute for Youth, Education, and Families.

NLC and Mayor Riley have worked closely on a number of Charleston initiatives, including the Municipal Leadership in Education Project; Parents of Young Children Early Childhood Education Project; the development and implementation of the Charleston Area Youth Master Plan; the launch of First Day of School Initiative and the annual First Day Festival that celebrates education and marks the start of the school year. The most recent initiative is the Childhood Obesity and Wellness Project that will assist Charleston and the school district as they work together to develop policies that promote school and community wellness.

“Chairing the NLC Council on Youth, Education, and Families is a wonderful opportunity to affect positive change for young people across the country,” said Riley. “I look forward to helping municipal leaders find best practices and initiatives which will strengthen families and improve outcomes for children and youth.”

The National League of Cities is the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans. NLC’s YEF Institute helps municipal officials take action on behalf of the children, youth, and families in their communities.
