Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute
In summer 2004, the city of Charleston sponsored its first Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute (PYLI), a leadership and community service training program that seeks to provide youth with the skills they need to play an active role in improving the quality of life in their communities. The Institute achieves this goal by guiding participants through a set of modules on a variety of topics that culminates in the planning and execution of a community service project. The following local non-profit organizations have worked with the city to plan the PYLI: TUW Teen Line, Youth Service Charleston, a Division of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Trident Area, Charleston County School District School to Careers, College of Charleston Upward Bound, The Citadel GEAR UP, the Charleston Center, and the Carolina Youth Development Center. Rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students attending public or private school in Charleston County are eligible to apply, and up to 26 students can participate in each session of the Institute. Any organization in the Charleston community can sponsor a PYLI, utilizing the services of the City's certified PYLI trainer.
